Worker health and safety

ISO 45001

The ISO 45001:2018 standard replaces the previous BS OHSAS 18001 standard, which is no longer valid as of March 12, 2021.

Health and safety advice and assistance

Replacing the previous standard, ISO 45001:2018 aims to provide international regulatory recognition (ISO) and facilitate integration with other ISO standards for management systems, as it is based on the Annex SL structure, which defines the common structure that all standards must comply with.

The ISO 45001 standard requires organizations that decide to implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management System to look beyond short-term issues and take into account what society in general expects from the organization in terms of responsibility.
Organizations will therefore also have to consider their contractors and suppliers and the effects that their activities have on their stakeholders.
As globalization and global trade grow, so too does the expectation that organizations will behave ethically in every aspect of their business, particularly with regard to the health and safety of their employees.
ISO 45001 offers organizations not only an internationally recognized standard, but also the right approach to formalize and structure risk management, legislative compliance management, the dissemination of safer working practices, and the assessment of worker health and safety performance.
The systemic approach facilitates a reduction in the number of accidents and business continuity.

Why implement an ISO safety management system?

The opportunities arising from this behavior are varied:

  • improved image among stakeholders due to the commitment shown in protecting S&SL;
  • is a tool for managing supply chain risk. Failure to comply with health and safety obligations in the workplace may result in the supply being blocked by order of the competent authorities following a serious/very serious accident at work and/or due to the risk of alleged or declared occupational diseases;
  • customer satisfaction (often, supplier qualification requires proof of BS OHSAS 18001 certification);
  • possibility of participating in public tenders and competitions, where such certification is required;
  • reduction of risks and related management costs through improvement of working conditions and worker health and safety through rationalization of human capital use;
  • reduction in INAIL premiums;
  • protection of the working environment and conscious use of resources;
  • economic savings related to reductions applicable in specific areas (e.g., reductions in personnel costs following improvements in workers’ health, reductions in accident management costs, etc.);
  • strong motivation and engagement of employees;
  • effective monitoring and control with regard to compliance with relevant legislation;
  • reduction or elimination of risks to employees and other stakeholders who may be exposed to hazards to S&SL associated with the organization’s production activities.
